About the Man and the Foundation

Alfonso Cavailere

Alfonso Cavaliere was an accomplished musician and conductor who worked with opera companies, symphony orchestras and Broadway productions. Showing talent early, Alfonso began formal violin lessons at age 5.

By 17, he made his professional debut as a soloist with the Pennsylvania Symphony. At 25, he began his conducting career at the Philadelphia Civic Ballet. His operate debut was in 1958 and three years later he was discovered by Leonard Bernstein, which began a long string of illustrious accomplishment with Broadway theatre, both on the road and in New York.

His broadway credits include Hello Dolly with Pearl Baily, Fiddler on the Roof with Zero Mostel and Zorba with Anthony Quinn.

Outgoing and affable, Alfonso treated his musicians with great respect, even as he demanded the best performances from them. This foundation and award were established to honor this fine man and to encourage emerging musicians to keep the world filled with magnificent music.
